Compress a Video for Discord
Discord's free upload limit is 20MB per file (it was raised from 10MB in August 2026). If a clip is bigger, Discord tells you your file is too powerful. This page compresses the video to under 20MB as an MP4 that plays inline in Discord, so you can send it without Nitro.
Everything runs in your browser and the video is never uploaded anywhere except, afterwards, to Discord by you.

How to compress a video for Discord

What gets too big for Discord
Game clips
Recordings from OBS, NVIDIA ShadowPlay or the Xbox Game Bar are often 60 fps at a high bitrate, so even 30 seconds can pass 20MB. FormShrink saves them at 30 fps and the right resolution to fit.
Phone videos
A short iPhone or Android video in 4K easily runs past 100MB. Compressed to 1080p or 720p, a minute or so fits under 20MB and still looks good in the Discord player.
Screen recordings
Bug reports, tutorials and meeting snippets recorded at 1440p or 4K shrink well, because most of the screen doesn't change from frame to frame.
Tips for clips that look good under 20MB
- Trim to the moment that matters. 20MB stretched over 2 minutes looks much worse than 20MB for 30 seconds.
- As a rough guide, about 1 minute fits in 20MB at 720p and about 30 seconds at 1080p. Fast, detailed motion needs more data than a calm scene.
- If the result looks blurry, the clip is too long for 20MB. Trim it, or send it in two parts.
- Discord shows MP4 (H.264) videos right in the chat, so the compressed file plays without anyone having to download it.
Questions about Discord video limits
What is Discord's file size limit?
Since August 2026, free accounts can upload files up to 20MB. Nitro Basic raises that to 50MB and Nitro to 500MB. Before the change the free limit was 10MB, so older guides that say 8MB or 10MB are out of date.
Why does Discord say my file is too powerful?
That's Discord's message for a file over your upload limit. Compress the video to 20MB here (or 50MB with Nitro Basic) and upload the new file.
Will the compressed video play inside Discord?

Can I compress a video for Discord on my phone?
Yes, in a recent version of Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android. Phones are slower than computers, so longer videos take more time.
