Compress an Image to 1MB

“File too large (max 1MB)” is one of the most common upload errors on the web. FormShrink compresses your photo to 1MB or less as a JPG. Photos larger than 4096 px on their longest side are scaled down to that size, while a standard 12-megapixel phone photo keeps its full resolution.

Compression runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded. It's free and needs no account.

This page presets the tool: Advanced mode, JPG output, a 1MB target (shown as 1024 in the Target size field) and resizing to fit within 4096 × 4096 px. Change them under Compression Settings; Reset Settings restores the preset.

Higher quality means larger file size
80%

The target size comes first: FormShrink lowers the quality below your chosen level when needed to reach it.

80%

Higher values preserve more detail but produce larger files.

Lanczos3: higher quality (slower), Bilinear: faster (lower quality).

How to compress an image to 1MB

  1. Add your photos

Drag up to 10 photos onto the upload area or click Browse Files. Files up to 50MB each are accepted, including large camera JPGs and TIFF scans.

  2. Check the target

1MB is 1,024KB here, and that's already filled in. If a site measures 1MB as 1,000,000 bytes, change the target to 976KB to stay safely under.

  3. Compress to 1MB and download

Click Compress Images. Each photo is saved at the highest quality that stays under 1MB. The results show the new size and dimensions; download each file or use Download All.

Why so many sites say “max 1MB”

1MB limits are everywhere, partly because 1MB is the default maximum request body size in nginx, one of the most widely used web servers. Sites that never changed that setting reject anything larger.

Web forms and support tickets

Contact forms, help-desk tickets and account settings pages often cap attachments at 1MB. Photos straight from a phone are usually several megabytes, so they fail until they're compressed.

Cover images and banners

Wide cover and header images need resolution but often come with a file size cap. A 1MB JPG at up to 4096 px has resolution to spare for any header crop.

Emailing a batch of photos

At around 1MB each, a dozen photos fit comfortably in one email, well inside the usual 20–25MB attachment limits, and they download quickly on the other end.

Listing sites

Sites for homes, cars and rentals ask for many photos per listing. Photos under 1MB upload quickly even over a phone connection and still look sharp in full-screen galleries.

Tips for getting under 1MB

  • If the limit comes from the server, aim a little lower, such as 950KB. Other form fields and the upload's own overhead count toward the same limit.
  • Photos from 48- or 50-megapixel cameras are scaled to 4096 px, which keeps them sharp. If you need their full resolution, switch off Resize Image, but expect lower quality at 1MB.
  • Screenshots and graphics with text keep crisper edges as PNG. If the site accepts PNG, set Output Format to PNG and keep the 1MB target.

Questions about compressing to 1MB

How do I compress an image to 1MB without losing quality?

JPG always loses some data, but at 1MB the loss is rarely visible. A 12-megapixel photo compressed to 1MB looks practically the same as the original at normal viewing size; you'd only notice softer fine detail when zooming in to 100%. For the most detail, set Visual quality to High (best detail).

Why is my photo still not under 1MB?

If the tool can't reach 1MB, it reports an error instead of producing an oversized file. That mostly happens with very large, very detailed images when Resize Image is off. Turn it back on (4096 px) or lower it to 3000 px and compress again.

Will the compressed photo be smaller in pixels?

Only if it's larger than 4096 px on its longest side. A 12-megapixel phone photo (4032 × 3024) keeps its exact dimensions, while a 48-megapixel photo is scaled to 4096 × 3072.

Can I compress a PNG screenshot to 1MB?

Yes. As a JPG it will easily fit, but sharp text can pick up faint smudges around the letters. If the site accepts PNG, set Output Format to PNG: text stays crisp, and the tool reaches the 1MB target by reducing colors first.

Is it safe to compress private photos here?

Yes. FormShrink's compression engine runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device and aren't stored anywhere. You can check it yourself: once the tool has handled your first image, it keeps working with your internet connection turned off.
